Yearly Events in Brisbane, Semester 2

If you’re in Brisneyland for Semester 2, here are a couple popular events to make sure you’re experiencing Brisbane like a local! Double-check the dates, as they vary from year to year.

5-14 August – The Ekka

A.k.a The Exhibition or The Royal Queensland Show. This is a favourite pastime for all true Queenslanders and has been a tradition for 138 years. Basically, it’s a state fair to promote Queensland’s rich agricultural industry. Highlights include the sheepdog show, the show-bag pavilion where you can pick up huge bags of candy, the fireworks display and the massive collection of rides. Pro tip from the locals: Don’t forget to buy the famous strawberry sundae!

17 August – The Ekka Races

Recently renamed Smirnoff Mekka Wednesday, this classic event is a spin-off from The Ekka itself. If you’re not into horse races or betting, don’t worry, many participants go just for the sake of dressing fancy and socialising. This is a great opportunity to hang with the majority of Brisbane’s 18-25 y/o population and see how they like to party. General admission is just $30AUD.

24 September – Riverfire

This event is a must if you’re around Brisbane in September. Southbank becomes extra lively on this particular Saturday, with a Super Hornet jet display, 30 minute firework show, live music and food. Have your own pre-party to avoid the hectic crowds early in the evening. Fireworks kick-off at 7pm so make sure that you secure a great spot by the river, somewhere around Southbank or Kangaroo Point!

2 October – Listen Out Festival

Listen Out tours around Australia yearly, and it’s always a great day of music – check out the lineup and see if it’s your cup of tea! If you don’t go to this music festival, at least try to go to one while you’re down under.

Enjoy!
